You could give back to your community and the planet by participating in USA WEEKEND Magazine’s Make A Difference Day (MDD) with Keep Bakersfield Beautiful (KBB). 

MDD is the fourth Saturday in October annually.  The Honorable Harvey L. Hall, Mayor of the City of Bakersfield, supports KBB’s MDD activities by proclaiming Make A Difference Day here in our hometown.  The day celebrates neighbors helping neighbors through community service projects.  You could help KBB make MDD a success by visiting our Environmental & Wellness Fair and/or doing a volunteer project which makes Bakersfield better. 

The Environmental & Wellness Fair is traditionally hosted by Lassens Natural Foods & Vitamins.  The fair is held in Lassens’ parking lot (The old Mervyn’s shopping center on California Avenue).  The parking lot is temporarily transformed into a free recycling collection site and an educational fair.  You could try tasty health and organic food samples at the fair and learn how to be more eco-friendly and healthy.  Plus, you could get giveaways and you may even win a prize from a variety of participating vendors and organizations.    

In addition to the MDD fair, KBB volunteers of all ages will do a variety of community service projects to improve the environment in Bakersfield.  Volunteer teams will plant trees and flower bulbs, pick up litter and illegal dump sites, recycle, and paint over graffiti.  Year after year more than 1,000 KBB volunteers paint over graffiti in several neighborhoods, plant dozens of trees and thousands of flowers, and clean up tons of trash.  KBB may supply volunteers with a limited number of trees, flower bulbs, trash bags, and gloves.  KBB hopes you will help Make A Difference this year.
